On August 5, 2007 ABC World News reported, "Experts fear Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical in everyday plastics, could harm people."
High level hearings will be held on August 6, 2007 to discuss the chemical's effects, especially on developing babies.
ABC News interviewed Fred vom Saal, a developmental biologist at the University of Missouri, for the segment. vom Saal explains that six billion pounds of BPA are manufactured each year, and that young children are at the highest risk of adverse effects from exposure to the chemical. He goes on to say that even at low levels, BPA can cause children to have an increase in prostate cancer, breast cancer and hyperactivity.
Bisphenol-A is widely used in food containers such as water jugs, the lining in tin cans and most plastic baby bottles.
